Buxton to the Drum Inn, via Oxford, 263 miles.

In the end, despite a 25% price hike since last September, we decided to stay at the Drum Inn because it is so convenient for Dover. I suppose that market forces enable them to charge what they like, and it is a quintessentially English spot. There must be some kind of unspoken premium charge for the picturesque.

The reason why we clocked-up 263 miles today is we dropped off Matthew at Oxford on the way. It was great to have someone to share in the pain of election night and help ensure that Gill did not have to sing a solo version of 'Happy Birthday' to me last Thursday.

It's good to be back in the van. I think we feel more at home in here than in the house.

We are still planning to end up in the Moselle valley eventually, but because the weather looks so good next week in Northern France, we are planning to spend a few nights on the Picardy/Nornandy border first, then visit Monet's garden at Giverny, before heading across the Champagne towards Luxemburg. It's a plan of sorts.
