Los Escullos

The Cabo de Gata occupies Spain's lower right-hand corner, the point where the long south-westerly diagonal which runs from the French border down to the edge of Andalucia takes an acute angled turn, and the coast slithers its way more or less directly westwards towards Portugal. The coastal hills here are protected by a national park and are one of the few parts of Spain's Mediterranean shore which has not been affected significantly by large scale tourist development. Nearby however is covered in plastic - agro-business is the other latter day blight which ensures that Spain never quite lives up to the promise of the tourist brochure. No plastic in the national park though; it's pristine here.

Camping Los Escullos is a couple of kilometers inland, on the northern side of Cabo de Gata. It's just off a minor road which peters-out into a dirt track running up into the hills. The nearest supermarket is 5 km, and apart from a small hotel by the beach and scattering of houses, there is nothing here to entertain long-stay, over-wintering retirees. The place attracts walkers; it's much more to our taste.

Heading back towards the camp site

Palm trees and the Med, how good is that?

The white building in the middle distance is Camping Los Escullos - spectacular setting!

This group of guys at the beach were Kawasaki's promotional team from the UK  in Spain for an exhibition

Wind-sculpted rocks by the beach.

We are just thinking through what to do next. looking at Wunderground and El Tiempo. We need a bit of a warmer spell for Granada as it is in the mountains. Later this week looks promising...but here is nice too. Oh the pressures of choice and freedom.

Tuesday -

In the end we decided to stay put. The weather over the next few days looks to be blustery with a chilly north wind. We went for a walk yesterday, and although it was clear, it was woolly hat weather, without a doubt. Towards the end of the week it looks to be going to calm down and get into the upper teens temperature wise. The plan is to tootle our way towards Almeria, visiting the city over the weekend, then head towards Granada in the middle of next week. More pictures below of well wrapped-up tourists in the Cabo de Gata!

Clear, but cold.

You kind of expect Clint to ride up the road wearing a leather hat and poncho, smoking a cigarillo.....

big scarf....

small (but cosy, as in tea) hat,,,,
